(Citrus aurantium bergamia)
Bergamot is citrus oil obtained from the peel by cold expression. The fruit looks similar to a small orange. Bergamot’s flavour is best known as the predominant ingredient in Earl Grey tea. It is also used to flavour local cakes and beverages in Southern Italy and Sicily.
Bergamot derives its name from a small town in Northern Italy called Bergamo. We use bergaptene-free bergamot oil; bergaptene is phototoxic and can permanently discolour the skin when exposed to sunlight.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, ladies using bergamot fragrances were unfortunately left with a permanent ‘pearl-necklace.’
Its uplifting properties are widely known; it can be very refreshing and has very relaxing properties. It has a light, fruity and floral fragrance. Its fresh and light fragrance makes it a natural anti-depressant. It is thought to clear the mind of anxious thoughts and help to give mental clarity.
Its antibacterial qualities can help in the treatment of acne and other skin infections. As bergamot is a fruit, it is slightly acidic; this acidity encourages the hair to lie flat, giving great shine and gloss to the hair.
In our Honey Bee Bath Ballistic, the underlying, sweet citrus note of bergamot oil helps to lift the spirits and create a feeling of well-being.
It is often used to treat those with Seasonally Affected Disorder (SAD).
Happy Hippy shower gel is one of our most revitalising shower gels. Its citrus scents work to refresh the body and mind with every use.
The Comforter Bubble Bar contains bergamot oil to relax, reassure and revive a worried mind. We also use the oil in our fine fragrances, such as The Comforter solid fragrance, meaning that these positive effects can be with you whenever you feel low.
We also use the oil in several of our best-selling bath ballistics – including Blackberry Bath Bomb, Happy Pill and Avobath – for its fresh fragrance and refreshing effect.
